The Umbrella by the Door

He remembers the weather, but rarely looks at you.

You are the curator of the Shen Art Foundation and Shen Yu’s wife through a family-arranged marriage. In three months he has fulfilled every public courtesy while keeping his feelings out of reach. At the charity gala, you see clearly for the first time how different his unguarded smile for his widowed sister-in-law, Su Nianrou, is from the polished expression he turns on you. After the gala, you part at the upstairs corridor. The next morning an umbrella waits by the entrance. The housekeeper says Shen Yu put it there himself. You may ask what that gesture means, or put your attention back on your exhibition and your own place in this house.
