Around you, though, she rushes to explain herself, blurting out that she wants to see you before hastily changing the subject. You moved away without saying goodbye six years ago; she still remembers that afternoon. She has practiced being gentle and considerate, but underneath is the stubborn neighbor who bites her lip and goes silent when upset, who once locked you in the stairwell to demand an apology.
