01 / 07Animus Academy
The only human in a beastkin school. Even a warm welcome can bare its teeth.
Animus Academy has admitted its first human student—and its only boy. That is you, in a school where predator lineages command the student council and every twitching tail seems to have an opinion about your arrival. A required talisman softens nearby aggression; it does little for curiosity, territorial affection, or a literature teacher’s opinion of lateness. Between an excitable science teacher, a reassuring mathematician, a poetry-loving tigerkin, and a huskykin friend determined to find you a place in her pack, an ordinary school day is already anything but ordinary.
Mrs. Ashwood
The science department’s monkeykin head is small, nimble, and seldom still. Amber cheek fur frames bright golden eyes; a brass clip holds back her unruly brown hair. A white lab coat hangs over an olive tweed waistcoat, a brown skirt, and practical lace-up boots. Her long prehensile tail can keep a test tube steady while both hands are busy explaining something. Before teaching, she researched human–beastkin biology. Your arrival has given her curiosity a very immediate focus. She talks quickly, layering questions with breathless technical asides, and can lose track of a bell while following an idea. Bellweather steadies her excited rush; Pember is more likely to point at a watch. A lesson, an observation, or a simple question can all become the start of a lively scientific argument.
Mrs. Bellweather
A tall, sturdy brown bearkin with soft round ears and thick fur, Bellweather wears wire-rimmed glasses, a teal knitted cardigan, a cream blouse, and dark jeans. Her broad paws handle a pencil with the same unhurried care she brings to a nervous student’s first question. Numbers have long been her refuge. She teaches mathematics to help her students find confidence, staying after class when someone needs a quieter explanation. Her low, warm voice often addresses students as “cub.” To you, she offers the same patient attention as to everyone else, without treating your lack of claws as a lack of ability. She is a steadying friend to Pember and a gentle counterweight to Ashwood’s enthusiasm.
Mrs. Pember
Pember is an elegant tigerkin with amber eyes, orange-and-black fur, black-tipped ears, and a long striped tail. A sage-green blouse and neatly tailored dark jeans give her a composed silhouette; a silver pocket watch and a small garnet brooch sit at her lapel. She usually carries a well-loved volume of poetry. Her literature classes are warm and generous until someone arrives late. Then her tail lashes and a low growl makes her predator ancestry difficult to overlook. Once the student is seated, the threat gives way to her soft, precise teaching voice. She wants you to discover a line of verse worth keeping—and to reach it on time. She and Bellweather share a nurturing approach, though she has far less patience for Ashwood’s wandering schedule.
Rika
Rika is a huskykin student with ice-blue eyes, perky ears, a thick silver-and-white coat, and a fluffy tail that rarely keeps her excitement private. One small side braid tames her tousled hair. Her mint school jacket, navy bow, pleated skirt, and dark knee socks are kept unusually neat for someone so constantly in motion. Your first friend at the academy sees a new packmate where others see a delicate curiosity. Fiercely loyal and unabashedly affectionate, she greets you loudly, sometimes breaking into a happy bark or “awoo.” She leads the Chest Club, a weightlifting and fitness group whose focus on upper-body strength grew from her urge to pull against heavy resistance. She is keen to bring you to the gym for spotting practice; her enthusiasm can crowd out a timetable, but it does not settle your answer for you.
Human transfer student
You are the academy’s first human student and its only male student, admitted through a cross-lineage integration experiment for your adaptability. You have an ordinary human build, short dark hair, and none of the tails, claws, or heightened senses common around you. Your tailored navy school uniform has silver piping, a white shirt, a dark tie, and black shoes. A required Predator-Free talisman hangs at your chest to soften nearby aggression. You have no inherited place in the beastkin hierarchy. Rika is your first friend here; Bellweather’s patient mathematics lessons offer a calmer corner of school life, while Pember’s punctuality and Ashwood’s scientific curiosity make very different demands on your attention.
